"DTLA INDUSTRIAL #1" by David Lewis Phelps

$800.00

Medium: Acrylic on paper

Dimensions: 20"X 20" X .5"

“Cities are typically surrounded by a dense, utilitarian world that is rarely acknowledged or documented. These paintings turn my attention to the industrial fringe that borders and supports modern cities. It is a realm of freight trains, storage yards, mechanical sheds, hangars, cargo facilities, electrical towers—and other infrastructures quite often overlooked. Train tracks crisscross these spaces like arteries sustaining urban life. These landscapes exist as vital, complex, and unexpectedly beautiful components of the modern world”

My name is David Lewis Phelps. I have worked, studied, and lived in Mexico, New York, Paris, and Los Angeles, where I am currently based. My work has been deeply informed by the arts and culture of Mexico—first through years as a student and renewed over time through continued travel. The country has remained a lasting source of inspiration. As an artist, I work in the media of painting and photography. For me, photography is an exploration of perspective, shape, and light. These same elements carry into my painting practice, though paintings emerge from a more internal and emotional space, where images and references surface intuitively rather than by observation. Using architectural elements, my work explores themes of memory and wonder, creating spaces that invite reflection and quiet discovery.
