Ariel Swartley was a nationally published rock critic and arts journalist before she was a photographer. She grew up in Massachusetts, studied English and Medieval languages at the University of Pennsylvania, then worked in Boston and New York before moving to Los Angeles in 1988. She has been a professional fine arts photographer and book maker since 2010, exhibiting in galleries on both coasts. What inspired her writing about a band or a novel still inspires her as a photographer: the interplay between the technical aspects of an art and the emotions which drive its creation. For the past 15 years she has explored ways of combining story and image, using text both found and created as narrative content and visual pattern.
