$450.00

Medium: stoneware ceramics

Dimensions: 10.5 x 7 x 7”

“I work mostly as a hand builder using slab, coil and pinch pot building methods. I am also very interested in the surface treatment both with and without the use of glazes along with oxide washes, engobes, metal shavings, underglazes, slips and compelling clay bodies.”

Rian, an industrial designer hailing from the rust belt of Michigan, honed his skills at College for Creative Studies in Detroit. The industrial landscape of Michigan, Ohio, and New York deeply influenced his formative years. Despite his training in the multidisciplinary field of industrial design, which emphasized creating functional and aesthetically pleasing objects, Rian found the clinical nature of his career to be somewhat lacking. This dissatisfaction led him to explore ceramics, an elective he took during his college years. Outside of his professional life, Rian engaged in ceramics in Atlanta, Detroit, and Buffalo before taking a hiatus from clay for several decades. In 2021, after relocating to Los Angeles, Rian rediscovered his passion for ceramics and embarked on a creative journey that rekindled his enthusiasm from the year 2000. Rian’s work draws inspiration from industrial, architectural and mechanical objects and the patinas that develop on discarded products that were once highly valued but eventually succumbed to decay.
