Artist Statement: For The Dude Show, I created DUDISM, a piece built from two carpet samples, decorated with handmade pins and foil pompons that playfully mock traditional rug tassels. The pins act as creative snapshots from The Big Lebowski, some carry iconic quotes, others capture stills or imagery that distill the film’s irreverent spirit. This work uses the rug not only as a literal reference to “tying the room together,” but as a stage for exploring masculinity and its playful unraveling. The film’s characters, far from embodying rigid ideals of manhood, often drift toward a childlike approach to life, conflict, and responsibility. That tension, between cultural expectations of masculinity and the freedom of refusing them, anchors the piece. By combining different materials, handmade details, and visual humor, DUDISM celebrates the art of not taking oneself too seriously, while nodding to The Big Lebowski’s enduring reminder that sometimes the most meaningful ties are the least conventional.
