David Lovejoy Solo Show

  • The Los Angeles Makery 260 South Los Angeles Street Los Angeles, CA, 90012 United States (map)

Los Angeles artist and self-described “thingmaker” Dave Lovejoy has spent more than four decades transforming ordinary objects into evocative sculptural assemblages. Trained through a combination of graphic design practice and years of study in ceramics and sculpture, Lovejoy has exhibited in galleries and museums in California, Hawaii, and Oregon, with works held in collections in the United States and Europe. His constructions—often built from reclaimed wood, tools, mechanical parts, photographs, and other artifacts—draw viewers into a world where the familiar becomes strange and where the visible “patina of use” reveals the quiet histories embedded in everyday materials.

In addition to his studio practice, Lovejoy is a co-founder of The Los Angeles Makery, a downtown Los Angeles artist-run space he established with fellow artists to create a collaborative environment for exhibitions, workshops, and making. His work has appeared in public and unexpected places throughout Los Angeles—including installations and sculptural collaborations at venues such as the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the famed Last Bookstore—reflecting his interest in art that lives within communities rather than apart from them. Whether assembling intricate object-based sculptures in the studio or participating in large-scale creative projects and public installations, Lovejoy’s work invites viewers to reconsider the overlooked things around them and imagine the stories they might still contain.
